Indiana High School Bowling

Southeastern Indiana Conference

2006

With the help of Steve Kunkel, commissioner of Indiana High School Bowling, plans were put in place for a high school bowling competition in south central Indiana.  Bowling centers in six communities agreed to form a bowling conference which was to be known as the Eastern River Valley High School Bowling Conference.  Ultimately three of these centers were not able to participate in the program.  Representatives from the three remaining centers from Columbus, Versailles and Madison, then agreed to go ahead with the program.  Having started late into the bowling season, high school bowlers representing their respective high schools competed in three meets, one in each bowling center (Columbus Bowling Center, Columbus, Indiana; Pollard’s Bowl, Versailles, Indiana & Ten Pin Alley, Madison, Indiana).  The Columbus Combined team won the conference season and tournament.

2007

A team from Scottsburg joined the original three teams and the conference name was changed to the Southeastern Indiana Conference for High School Bowling.  This seemed to be a more appropriate and more descriptive name.  The schedule included meets at each of the hosting bowling centers, as before.  The season concluded with the conference tourney, held at Pollard’s Bowl, Versailles, Indiana.  Scottsburg took home the Match Traveling Trophy for the season, as well as the Conference Tourney Championship.  With a second year of experience, and hopes of adding more centers and teams, the group agreed to continue the program the following fall.  The number of participating high school bowlers had increased from 25 – 30 for 2006-2007 to between 40 and 50 for the 2007-2008 season.

2008

Representatives of six bowling centers gathered in September to formulate plans for the upcoming season.  Teams from high schools in the bowling center areas that would be bowling included: Columbus North High School, Columbus; Seymour High School, Seymour; Scottsburg High School, Scottsburg; Madison Consolidated High School, Madison; South Ripley High School, Versailles and Switzerland County High School, Vevay, Indiana.   Discussions were held with regard to making the conference a member of Indiana High School Bowling, the official High School Bowling program for the state of Indiana.

As time for the season approached two schools were unable to join the Columbus North, Madison Consolidated, Seymour and South Ripley teams.  The season schedule included one match in Columbus, and the other centers hosting two matches each.  The Indiana High School Bowling member teams were: Columbus North Boys and Girls teams, Seymour Boys and Girls teams, a South Ripley Boys team and a co-ed team from Madison Consolidated.  Scottsburg had decided to join the group, but not as an IHSB member school team.  Representatives of the four member schools agreed to a dual competition for this season, with the IHSB member schools bowling in one group and the Scottsburg team, a third team from Seymour and a combined team from Versailles, along with the member school teams, making up a combined conference.  As in the past each center would host a meet.  Four of these meets would be two match events.  The season ending meet would be a position round of 10 Baker games, which would decide the Combined Conference Champion and season award winners.

The combined Conference Champion (decided by overall match by match placement) was the Columbus North Boys team, followed by the Seymour Boys team, with the Versailles Combined team and Scottsburg tied for third.  The SIC-IHSB member conference, however, was won by the Seymour Boys team with a 7-1 match record, followed by the Columbus North Boys team at 5-3.  This season saw two girls’ teams competing.  Due to the number of girl’s teams, it was decided, for this year, to have them compete alongside the boys teams with separate year end awards.  The girl’s teams from Columbus North and Seymour ended the season with identical match records.  The Seymour Girls prevailed with a higher total pin count.

The first ever Conference Sectional Tournament, for Indiana High School Bowling members only, was held at Pollard’s Bowl, Versailles, Indiana.  Teams from Columbus North, Seymour and South Ripley high schools competed in the team portion of the tourney.  Individual bowlers from those schools as well as Madison Consolidated competed in the individual competition.  Both the Columbus boys and girls teams won their respective sectional team competitions.  They advanced on to the Regional round at Pinheads, in Fishers, Indiana, on Saturday February 7.

The individual competitions were won by Jordan Gray, Columbus North and Amanda Leap, Madison Consolidated.  They along with Thomas McClelland, Madison Consolidated; Marty Porter, South Ripley; Nathan Meisberger, South Ripley; Anthony Kipper, Columbus North and Sarah Jessup, Columbus North advanced on to the individual portion of the Regional round in Fishers, on February 7.  Though both SIC teams failed to advance on to the Semi State, both competed strongly and learned valuable lessons to take into the next season.  Jordan Gray and T J McClelland both advanced to the State Finals held at Cooper’s Sport Bowl, Anderson, Indiana.  Jordan Gray, Columbus North, finished a very respectable sixth place, with T J McClelland finishing twelfth.  Both boys earned All State honors.  All-in-all it was a good showing for the conference’s first year as an Indiana High School member conference.

With some minor bumps along the way, the season was a successful one.  The competition was keen, with the Columbus North Boys and Seymour Boys contending for top honors each match.

2009

Discussions were held with Wesley Dye, regarding expanding the number of teams in the conference.  At the fall coaches meeting, three new teams were introduced.  Bloomington North High School, bowling out of Suburban Lanes, Bloomington, Bloomington South High School, bowling out of Classic Lanes, Bloomington and Trinity Lutheran High School, bowling out of Starlite Lanes, Seymour officially joined the original four members of the Southeastern Indiana Conference for the 2009-2010 season.  The line up of teams for the 2009-2010 season would be seven boys and two girls teams.

A junior varsity program would be added during the season.  The season was to begin on November 8, at Suburban Lanes, in Bloomington.  Each meet would consist of two matches, of two regular games, with twenty points per game and the team point total determining the match winner.  The season would have six meets, of two matches, and a position round.  The season would conclude with the conference Sectional Tourney, at Columbus Bowling Center, Columbus, on Saturday, January 23.  All indications are for a very competitive competition, with prospects for a very favorable tournament outcome.
